Barcelona, 22-23 September 2025. The SMARTIN project, funded under the Horizon Europe programme, officially kicked off its activities this week with a two-day meeting in Barcelona, bringing together 17 partners from across Europe. Coordinated by ERTICO – ITS Europe, the project takes a holistic approach to bridge the gap between infrastructure management needs and emerging digital solutions. It aims to revolutionise the way Europe monitors, manages and optimises its transport infrastructure, helping Europe take a decisive step toward safer, more efficient, inclusive and sustainable mobility.
Launched on 1 July 2025, SMARTIN (Smart digital solutions for multimodal, accessible, resilient, user-centric urban infrastructure) addresses one of today’s key challenges: how to meet growing mobility needs while reducing emissions and improving safety. The project will harness artificial intelligence (AI), big data, the Internet of Things (IoT) and 5G connectivity to develop advanced analytics capable of strengthening predictive maintenance, improving real-time monitoring and situational awareness, and enabling early incident detection and effective traffic management. In doing so, SMARTIN will optimise resources, promote multimodality and guarantee fair access to mobility for all, including vulnerable road users.
A key ambition of the project is to ensure that digitalised infrastructure assets and mobility optimisation services can operate in harmony. By fusing data from multiple sources and geospatial levels, SMARTIN will provide operators and decision-makers with the tools they need for proactive planning, accurate performance prediction and more resilient infrastructure management.
To test and demonstrate its solutions in real conditions, SMARTIN will conduct four large-scale pilots in diverse European contexts: improving micromobility safety with a focus on cycling infrastructure in Barcelona (Spain), introducing dynamic lane management supported by digital twins in Turin (Italy), enhancing multimodal coordination of regional bus and rail networks in Latvia, and boosting the efficiency and safety of inland waterway transport in Budapest (Hungary).
Georgia Aifandopoulou, SMARTIN Technical Coordinator, stated: “SMARTIN will consolidate innovative digital tools, data-driven solutions, AI models and user-centric services for managing and operating transport infrastructure to facilitate safe, resilient and accessible multimodal transport. The excellence of the consortium partners, their expertise and capabilities as well as the experience in implementing such solutions, will secure a unique but scalable result, which in the long-term will improve safety and efficiency when managing and operating transport infrastructure”.
SMARTIN aligns closely with key European priorities. By advancing the goals of the European Green Deal, supporting the Vision Zero target of eliminating road fatalities by 2050, and contributing to the Digital Europe agenda, the project will play a vital role in shaping a safer, more sustainable and digitally empowered transport system for Europe.
